Gwlad o d'wllwch wyf yn trigo
Trigo'r wyf mewn gwlad o dywyllwch

1,2,3,4,5,6;  1,3,(7,8).
(Gruddfan mewn tywyllwch)
Gwlad o d'wllwch wyf yn trigo,
Aipht yw'r màn lle'r wyf yn byw,
Y mae tywyllwch wedi'm d'rysu,
  Tywyllwch anorchfygol yw:
Cyfod haul cyfiawnder goleu,
  'Nawr llewyrcha yn dy nerth,
Danfon feddyginiaeth rasol,
  Dros y creigydd mawrion serth.

Nad i bechod fy nghongcwero,
  Iesu nad e felly nhrin:
Y mae elfen yn fy yspryd,
Sydd a'th gyfraith di yn un:
Hoff yw d'eiriau,
    mer sydd ynddynt,
  Buan doed yr amser bydd,
Ar fy nwydau afreolus
  Iddynt hollol gario'r dydd.

D'wed pa bryd ca'i yfed dyfroedd,
  Dyfroedd gloyw sy'n iachâu,
Pob rhyw bleser wedi darfod,
  Ond yn unig dy fwynhau:
Pwyso'm henaid ar dy fynwes,
  Edrych yn dy wyneb llòn,
Caru nes anghofio'r oriau,
Sy i mi ar y ddaear hòn.

Dyddiau byrion sydd fel blwyddyn,
  Rhyfedd faithder hyd yr oes,
Os ymddifad o'th gwmpeini,
Fydd fy enaid ddydd a nos:
Rho i mi deimlo grym dy gariad,
  Cariead wna na ofnwyf mwy,
'R holl fwystfilod rheipus creulon,
Sydd yn bygwth i mi glwy.

Pam mae'm llygad gwag yn sylwi,
Ar un tegan sy'n y byd?
Nid oes yn nherfynau natur,
  Ddim sy ddigon lanw mryd:
Gwelai'r beddrod wrth fy ochor,
  Yn agor arna'i safn fawr,
A'm hadeilad yn dadfeilio
  Bron a syrthio iddo lawr.

Etto gwell nid wyf un gronyn,
  Bywyd, bedd nac angau du,
Ni ddod argraph pur dy natur
Mewn un modd ar f'enaid i:
Gweld dy wyneb, byw'n dy gwmpni,
  Teimlo'th anorthfygol ras,
Ar fy meiau mawr yn unig
  All yn gyfan gario'r ma's.

Ffynnon wyt o bob tosturi,
  Nid oes gwybod
      faint dy râs,
Dy haelioni sydd yn cynnal,
Pob peth dàn yr awyr lâs:
Dal fy ysbryd gwàn i fynu,
  Edrych ar y bryniau mawr,
Sydd yn pwyso ar fy nghalon,
  Ac yn ceisio'm dodi lawr.

Os gwaredi fi o'm cyfyngder
Ac os sefi ar fy rhan,
Os gostegi rym y storom,
  Os cynheli fi i'r làn;
Ti gai nhafod,
    ti gai nghalon,
  Ti gai feddwyf
      yn y byd,
Ti gai'r clod,
    a thi gai'r moliant,
  Ti gai'r enw i ti ' gyd.
D'wed pa bryd ca'i :: Bryd, fy Nhad, câf
Y mae tywyllwch wedi :: Mae tywyllwch wedi

(A lament in darkness)
A land of darkness I am inhabiting,
Egypt is the place where I am living,
The darkness has confused me,
  Insuperable darkness it is:
Rise, Sun of bright righteousness,
  Now shine in thy strength,
Send gracious healing,
  Across the great steep rocks.

Do not let sin conquer me,
Jesus do not let it treat me thus:
There is an element in my spirit,
Which is one with thy law:
Delightful are thy words,
    marrow is in them,
Let the time that shall be come soon,
Over my unruly lusts
For them to wholly carry the day.

Say when I may drink waters,
  Clear waters which are healing,
Every kind of pleasure having faded away,
  Except enjoying thee alone:
Leaning my soul on thy breast,
  Looking on thy cheerful face,
Loving until forgetting the hours,
Which are left to me on this earth.

Short days are like a year,
A strange length an age long,
If deprived of thy company,
Shall be my soul day and night:
Grant me to feel the force of thy love,
Love that shall make me fear no more,
All the cruel, rapacious beasts,
Which are threatening to wound me.

Why are my weak eyes noticing,
Any trinket that is in the world?
There is within the boundaries of nature,
Nothing sufficient to flood my mind:
I see the tomb by my side,
Opening upon me its great jaws,
And my building almost crumbling
  And falling down into it.

Still I am not one grain better,
  Life, grave, nor black death,
No pure impression of thy nature shall come
By any means upon my soul:
To see thy face, to live in thy company,
  To feel thy unconquerable grace,
Alone over all my great sins
  Can completely carry the field.

A fount art thou of every mercy,
  There is no knowing
      the extent of thy grace,
Thy goodness is upholding
Every thing under the blue sky:
Hold my weak spirit up,
  Look on the great hills,
Which are weighing on my heart,
And trying to put me down.

If thou deliver me from my straits
And if thou stand on my part,
If thou still the force of the storm,
  If thou hold me up;
Thou shalt have my tongue,
    thou shalt have my heart,
  Thou shalt have what
      I possess in the world,
Thou shalt have the acclaim,
and thou shalt have the praise,
Thou shalt have the name all to thyself.
Say when I may :: When, my God, may I ... ?
The darkness has :: Darkness has
